Course Types explained

Individual / Personal Development

Including learning undertaken primarily for the enjoyment of the subject and / or to develop a recreational interest. 

Key course types are:

  • Leisure and pleasure learning – including photography, dance, art & craft, languages for travel, history, cooking / food & drink, bridge
  • Social use of technology – including basic computer use, email, the internet, applications such as family tree research
  • Life Skills and personal development e.g. budgeting, tax, communicating with confidence, leadership, assertiveness
  • Health and fitness courses – including Sports skills, Yoga, pilates, healthy eating, walking, therapy & massage, managing with disabilities

Supporting Families

Course normally involving multiple members of the same family group.

Key course types are:

  • Strengthening the family unit - including Parenting skills, communication, discipline, healthy relationships, under fives developmental play
  • Family literacy and numeracy, including help with homework
  • Managing challenges, drug / alcohol dependency, care dependency, language / cultural barriers, awareness of disabilities

Strengthening Communities

Learning designed to engage and empower residents, groups and organisations and develop capacity for self sustainability

  • Environmental and safety, including Preserving natural habitats, recycling, fire prevention, personal safety, road safety
  • Active citizenship, including campaigning, volunteering, using public services, running a community group 

Preparation for Life and Work

Learning designed to move the individual towards employment or to make positive changes to improve career prospects

  • Career planning and job search, job application skills, writing a CV
  • Improving numeracy or literacy for work
  • Commercial / business applications of ICT
  • EAL i.e. English as an Additional Language / ESOL
  • Self employment and business start-up
